On Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 pm in Rieth Recital Hall, guest artists Phillip Serna, Viola da Gamba and Kevin Vaughn, Harpsichord and Organ and Goshen College Music Department Faculty and students will present Reflection and Restoration: A Goshen College Musical Offering, as the inaugural concert of the 2026-27 Rieth Recital Series.
This event is also a special fundraiser to restore the consort of four viola da gambas or viols; bowed, fretted, 6-stringed instruments used in Renaissance and Baroque music, that are in the instrument collection of Goshen College. A Pre-Concert Lecture at 7:00 pm in Rieth Recital Hall will discuss the provenance of these instruments, made by American luthiers, Harold and Arlene Westover.
The concert will feature Solomia Soroka, violin soloist with Phillip Serna and Kevin Vaughn, continuo and Scott Hochstetler, baritone, as soloist for J.S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 56, Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen. A reception in the Music Center Lobby following the concert will provide an opportunity to meet the guest artists, view the consort of viols and continue the legacy of early music at Goshen College.
